This delightful ice cream shop is named after the O'Brien sisters Megan, 11, and Haley, 9, of Kingwood. After researching franchise opportunities, Mom Laura O'Brien discovered Blue Bell Ice Cream would partner with her, allowing her to design the interior and name the shop. The entire concept was a year in the making, she said.
"The girls were sort of arguing about which of their names we would use," said O'Brien, an accountant with a public relations background. "That's when we came up with the idea for Two Gems."
The walls feature caricatures resembling Sparky Nolan, president of the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce; U.S. Congressman Ted Poe and Guy Sconzo, superintendent of Humble ISD. The sketches were created by Houston artist Eve Myles.
"When we first opened, I gave a 10 percent discount to all of the HISD teachers and staff," said O'Brien. "Mr. Winicki, the principal at Creekwood, sent out an e-mail to all of the teachers at his school saying that he'd pay for ice cream from 7 to 8 (p.m.). We had quite a few teachers come by."
Ice cream aficionados enjoy Blue Bell favorites such as cake batter, peppermint, chocolate with peanut butter chunks and cinnamon in waffle, sugar and cake cones.
